How to get the perfect work/life balance: Do you want to 'Be More, Do More, Have More and Give More' but aren’t sure where to start? How about right here, right now, with these inspiring TED talks.

1. How I Learned to Read – and Trade Stocks – in Prison by Curtis Carroll

Curtis Carroll couldn’t read, write or spell. Then he got convicted for robbery and murder and put in jail. Accidentally picking up the business section of a newspaper one day, a fellow inmate gave him a brief rundown on stocks.

It wasn’t until years later, after Carroll had taught himself to read, that he recalled this conversation. Now literate, with a renewed sense of self-worth, knowledge and disciple, he began looking into how to also become financially literate.

He co-founded a programme called Financial Empowerment Emotional Literacy (FEEL), which teaches people how to separate their financial decisions from their emotions, as well as how to make their money work for them. A stirring speech, worthy of the standing ovation it gets at the end.

2. How to Make Work-Life Balance Work by Nigel Marsh

This dad-of-four talks candidly and amusingly about how he came to achieve work-life balance. He sympathises with those leading lives of ‘quiet, screaming desperation’, while ‘doing jobs they hate to enable them to buy things they don’t need to impress people they don’t like’.

He refers to big commercial corporations as ‘abattoirs of the human soul’ and encourages us to design our own life rather than allowing someone else to design it for us. He also warns of falling into the ‘I’ll have a life when I retire’ mindset, by which point our health will be failing, we’ll be divorced, and we’ll have no friends left. If you want to change your life, do it NOW.

3. What Makes a Good Life? Lessons from the Longest Study on Happiness by Robert Waldinger

Calling on the findings of a 75-year (and counting) research project, the Harvard Study of Adult Development, whereby 724 men have been examined, interviewed and observed, Robert Waldinger outlines the number-one factor in achieving happiness: good relationships.

He explains that, in our youth, we may strive for fame and fortune, thinking that’s the route to contentment. It’s not. If you want to be happier, healthier (physically and mentally) and live longer, make sure you nurture your relationships.

4. Forget Multitasking, Try Monotasking by Pablo Cardini

At around three minutes long, this talk is short and sweet.

Pablo Cardini makes a simple point, perfectly illustrated by a plate of burnt sausages and burgers. Multitasking leads to distraction, which leads to failure. Rather than focusing on the task at hand (barbecuing), he was also emailing, talking on the phone, texting and taking photos (to later upload to social media about his ‘awesome’ dinner).

Why is multitasking praised? He encourages us to slow down and to try monotasking to see how more enriched our lives could be.
